Mehari Sequar Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition “You Wildin” presenting the works of the interdisciplinary artist Alim Smith.
“You Wildin” explores the very core of Smith’s creative journey. From his formative years growing up and attending art school in Delaware, Alim Smith was surprisingly not inspired by – nor connected to – the artistic surroundings he was exposed to. When he thought of art he did not immediately associate it with black culture per se; instead, he envisaged art through the creativity invoked by listening to Hip Hop, Jazz and Rhythm and Blues.
About Alim Smith
Smith, also known as “Yesterday Nite,” is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited in art galleries across the United States, most notably in New York, Philadelphia, and at the infamous Coachella Festival. He creates pioneering, surrealistic cultural artifacts that both shift and challenge the average perspectives.
His artistic process incorporates multiple mediums learned through several years of applied studies in Visual Art, Communicative Arts, and Photography. Smith’s creative exploration is inspired by a multitude of experiences and events from his culture.
The beautiful colorful chaos of his works, the rhythm and life of his subjects, the dark humor embedded within each brushstroke, the rich cultural inspiration, the bold, and often sensual nature of his work are what distinguishes Alim Smith.
Smith dedicates his creativity to acknowledging, celebrating, deifying, and capturing the beauty of black expression through surreal whimsical lenses.
